Sub: Addendum to Engineering Circular No. 85 regarding clarification on the applicability of ISM Code

            It has come to the notice of the Directorate that contents of the Engineering Branch Circular No. 85 dated 04th May 2007 is not duly interpreted and in effect, cargo ships whose GT has increased to more than 500 subsequent to their re-measurement as per the International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969, are not complying with the ISM Code.

           It is to be noted that all ships, irrespective of the operation area i.e., whether operating exclusively on Indian coast or on foreign going or both, which are registered under Merchant Shipping Act and whose tonnage is more than 500 GT as per International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969, are required to comply with the ISM Code Certification requirement w.e.f from 01st January 2010.

              This issues with the approval of the competent authority.
